About Us
Gallery on the Bay opened in Hamilton, Ontario, in 1995, and thrived for 25 years, showcasing artists from the region and beyond. We also hosted musical events, book launches, and plays. The Gallery took up half of the main floor of an historic building that was once the headquarters of Hamilton Bridge and Tank. (We lived in the other half)
For the book launches we partnered with independent booksellers Brian Prince Bookseller and Different Drummer Books of Hamilton and Burlington. For the musical events we partnered at times with Mohawk College, the Hamilton Philharmonic, and several local and international musicians. The plays were written and directed by David Laing Dawson and featured a number of local actors, all organized and produced by Marlaise Dawson.
Just a few blocks away, The Artword Theatre was offering wonderful evenings of song, music, theatre, story telling and dance. We collaborated with Ron and Judith of Artword Theatre to mount two of David's plays, one of them being MacBush, The Musical.
Many days and evenings of good wine, music, art, theatre, literature, and conversation.
COVID arrived and we had to cancel all events. Retirement was looming in the near future so we decided maybe it was time, and we closed the Gallery and sold our wonderful old building.
We kept our Gallery website with some plans to re-emerge as a virtual gallery.
David has continued to paint, focussing now on our new landscape in beautiful British Columbia, and he returned to writing novels. And so, though we may add other artists and writers in the future, we decided to rekindle our Gallery on the Bay website dedicated to David's work alone.
His new novel, I Swear to God, will be released in the autumn of 2024, and his paintings now hang in the Tutt Street Gallery in Kelowna, and Gallery at the Rise in Big White.
